Prince Harry’s book sold much less copies than expected

In the beginning of 2023, made headlines with the release of his much-anticipated memoir, Spare.

However, as new reports emerge, it appears that the book didn’t quite meet the lofty sales figures that were expected.

According to royal expert Daniela Elser, while Spare initially made a splash in the market, it’s now being viewed as a significant financial disappointment.

Elser noted that although Spare “almost immediately broke records” upon its release, it has since become evident that the sales numbers are underwhelming.

Paula Froelich, a former deputy editor at Page Six, has delved into the sales data and suggests that Prince Harry’s hefty advance from Penguin Random House might not be justified based on these figures.

To put things into perspective, reports indicate that in order for Harry to recoup his considerable upfront payment, he would have needed to sell over twice the amount of books that actually moved off the shelves.

This is a rather sobering revelation for a memoir that was expected to be a blockbuster.

While the buzz around Spare suggested promising initial sales, the reality of the situation tells another story.

Various sources have reported that the memoir sold around 1.2 million hardback copies.

However, according to industry insights shared by Nation, for Penguin Random House to break even, a staggering 2.7 million copies would need to be sold.

It’s particularly telling that hardcover editions represented 80 percent of the book’s overall sales, making those figures crucial in assessing Harry’s performance in the literary market.

Initially, when Spare launched on January 10, the reaction was overwhelmingly positive, indicating a successful debut in the competitive world of publishing.

However, as the dust settles, the reality may not be as glamorous as it first appeared.

Reports suggested that Spare sold over 1.43 million copies across various formats in regions including the U.S., Canada, and the UK.

Still, these numbers may not be enough to offset the cost of the significant advance Harry received, leaving industry insiders speculating.

Interestingly, after the initial flurry of sales, bookstore professionals like Shannon DeVito from Barnes & Noble noted an impressive volume of purchases, stating that consumers were flocking to stores at all times of the day to buy the memoir.

This excitement, however, does seem to have diminished with time.

Harry’s lucrative book deal, which was rumored to be worth around £15 million, was thought to encompass not just Spare but potentially more writings in the future.

Many fans and analysts began wondering if would soon follow suit with her own memoir.

Despite the hush around Meghan’s prospective book, biographer Tom Bower, who has chronicled the lives of the couple, hinted in an earlier conversation that she is indeed working on her own memoir, which he believes could be a financial hit.

The question remains whether these upcoming releases will fare better in terms of sales.

While the excitement surrounding Prince Harry’s venture into the literary world was palpable, the reality of the book sales reveals a different side.

What appeared to be a promising journey has turned into a cause for concern when it comes to financial success.

Fans are left pondering whether Harry’s ambitious memoir will ultimately be labeled a financial flop or if there’s still hope for a turnaround as more readers discover its contents.

Will future titles by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex manage to capture public interest more effectively?

Only time will tell.

For now, Harry’s foray into autobiographical writing serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of publishing, where even royal tales can be met with unexpected outcomes.
