When it comes to love stories, few can rival the remarkable bond between Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Lisa Meyers.
Their journey together spanned an impressive 41 years, culminating in a heartfelt relationship that endured until Kristofferson’s passing on September 28 at the age of 88.
Reflecting on his life, Kristofferson once expressed profound gratitude for reaching such a ripe age while still surrounded by his loved ones.
In a 2013 interview with NPR, he revealed, “I feel nothing but gratitude for being this old and still above ground, living with the people I love.”
With eight children and a devoted wife by his side, he acknowledged her unwavering support during their life together.
Kristofferson had just come out of his second marriage to singer Rita Coolidge when fate introduced him to Lisa, a law student at Pepperdine University, in 1982.
Their meeting took place at a Malibu gym, where Kristofferson cleverly borrowed exercise equipment as a way to strike up a conversation with her—a tactic he would later describe as a “ploy.”
The couple exchanged vows in February 1983, embarking on a shared life that brought forth five children: Jesse (40), Jody (39), Johnny (36), Kelly (34), and Blake (30).
Looking back, Kristofferson admitted that he was initially hesitant about diving into a serious relationship again.
He had been using the road and performing as his escape after his previous marriage, but gradually, family life began to take precedence.
“This is what really matters,” he realized.
For them, Hawaii became a sanctuary.
In a candid chat with PEOPLE in 1998, Kristofferson shared that moving to the islands with Lisa and starting a family was the best decision he ever made.

At the time of his passing, Kris was in the comfort of their Maui home, surrounded by his beloved family.
His representative confirmed that he died peacefully, leaving behind not only Lisa and their children but also three from his earlier marriages: Tracy (62), Kris Jr. (56), and Casey (50).
Following his death, the family released a poignant statement that resonated with love and appreciation.
They expressed, “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully at home.
We’re all so blessed for our time with him.
Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all.”
