Disgust Unveiled: Tom Cruise’s Encounter with Dustin Hoffman in the Oscar-Winning Film that Garnered $412M

Dustin Hoffman, renowned for his roles in iconic films like Rain Man and The Graduate, has frequently found himself embroiled in controversies.

A notable incident involving Tom Cruise left the latter repulsed by Hoffman’s actions during a particular scene in the 1988 movie Rain Man, where Hoffman’s method acting took an unexpected turn.

In a memorable sequence within the movie, as Cruise and Hoffman were confined in a telephone booth, Cruise disclosed his revulsion towards Hoffman’s real act of flatulence within the cramped space.

The incident left the Top Gun star genuinely disgusted, and his reactions to Hoffman’s behavior during those scenes were unfeigned.

During the release of Rain Man, Cruise was already riding high on fame following his role in Top Gun two years earlier.

While starring alongside Hoffman undoubtedly elevated his celebrity status, it came at the expense of filming uncomfortable and distasteful scenes with the seasoned actor.

In one scene where their characters, Ray and Charlie, are squeezed into a phone booth, Ray breaks wind while on the call, prompting a shocked Charlie (played by Cruise) to inquire about the source of the odor.

In an interview, Cruise candidly shared his discomfort, revealing that Hoffman indeed let out a fart during the scene, causing him genuine repulsion.

Cruise emphasized that his reactions in the scene mirrored his authentic feelings, even though he maintained his character throughout.

Reflecting on the incident, Hoffman unabashedly celebrated the scene, asserting that despite his experience in Shakespearean dramas and plays by Arthur Miller, the flatulence scene in Rain Man stood out as a peak moment in his career.

The uncouth act in Rain Man was just one instance of unprofessional conduct from Hoffman that the industry overlooked.

Reports surfaced of the actor physically slapping Meryl Streep on her first day of shooting for a scene, further tarnishing his reputation.

During the filming of the 1979 movie Kramer vs. Kramer, Streep endured a distressing ordeal when Hoffman unexpectedly struck her on camera.

Recollecting the incident, Streep expressed her dismay, highlighting that as an actor, one should feel safe and unrestricted during scenes.

However, Hoffman’s actions crossed a line, especially considering it was her debut film.

Amidst the numerous controversies surrounding him, Hoffman’s collaboration with Cruise in the 1988 film Rain Man remains a prominent chapter in both actors’ careers.

Rain Man can now be streamed on Paramount+, showcasing the enduring legacy of this acclaimed movie.
