The 35-year-old musician reached a plea deal at Fishkill Town Court, avoiding jail time by agreeing to complete 65 hours of community service and pay a $250 fine.
The incident occurred at a performance in June 2007 at a minor league baseball stadium close to Poughkeepsie.
Akon hurled a teenage boy off the stage, causing another attendee to suffer a concussion after the teenager landed on her.
Witnesses reported that someone from the audience threw an object at Akon during the show, prompting the artist to demand the culprit be identified.
Subsequently, a security guard brought a 15-year-old boy to the stage, whom Akon then lifted onto his shoulders and cast into the crowd.
The entire episode was captured on video.
Following his guilty plea, Akon personally met with the now 16-year-old fan, Anthony Smith, and extended apologies to both him and his parents.
Though Akon did not comment on the matter upon leaving, his attorney, Andrea Zellan, released a statement expressing relief that the issue had been settled and conveying Akon’s eagerness to move forward from the unfortunate incident.
Initially faced with charges of endangering the welfare of a minor and second-degree harassment, Akon has now resolved the legal proceedings stemming from the altercation in New York.
Dutchess County Assistant District Attorney Anthony Parisi was unavailable for immediate comment following the plea agreement.
Prior to the New York altercation, Akon faced backlash after a video surfaced of him engaging in suggestive behavior with a teenage girl at a concert in Trinidad in April 2007.
He later publicly apologized, claiming he was unaware of the girl’s age at the time.
