Alison Brie on Working with Husband Dave Franco in Intimate Scenes

Alison Brie and Dave Franco maintain a strictly professional approach while working together.

The 40-year-old Golden Globe nominee shared that there is no discomfort when her 37-year-old husband directs her intimate scenes, as she delved into their latest film, Somebody I Used to Know, during a conversation with Jezebel.

Brie mentioned, “Dave and I have collaborated enough by now.”

Reflecting on their past projects, Brie recalled, “Our second film collaboration as actors was Jeff Baena’s The Little Hours.

In that movie, Dave had intimate scenes with three other actors besides me, so that experience felt like breaking the ice.”

Alongside The Little Hours from 2017, the duo has appeared together in films such as The Disaster Artist (2017), The Rental (2020), and Baena’s Horse Girl (2020).

“I understand it may sound unconventional, but we are performers; this is our profession.

It’s not as strange as it seems.

Especially with this project, which we co-created, our primary focus is always the film itself.

Is the scene authentic and effective?

We ensure that my romantic interactions with [costar Jay Ellis] flow naturally without any awkwardness,” Brie elaborated.

In Somebody I Used to Know, a movie written by the couple and directed by Franco, Brie portrays Ally, a reality TV producer who revisits her hometown and rekindles a past romance with ex-boyfriend Sean (Ellis) during his wedding weekend to Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons).

The GLOW star previously disclosed to PEOPLE that she and Franco typically engage in a discussion before accepting roles involving intimate scenes, as a gesture of consideration for each other.

“It’s essential to have some form of communication beforehand,” Brie remarked in August.

“Surprising someone with that kind of information wouldn’t be fair.

It is an unusual aspect of our job, and I can see how it might appear from an outsider’s perspective.”

Having exchanged vows with Franco in March 2017, Brie emphasized that professionalism prevails when they embody their characters.

“Our dynamic shifts when we step into character; it becomes a unique experience.

Our work demands the utmost vulnerability at any given moment.

It’s simply part of the job description we signed up for,” Brie added.

Now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Somebody I Used to Know showcases the collaborative efforts of Alison Brie and Dave Franco in bringing their creative vision to life.
