Debra Messing’s Disturbing Experience During A Walk In The Clouds

The entertainment industry is notoriously challenging for women, as revealed by actress Debra Messing in her recent disclosure at the 2017 MAKERS Conference.

Recounting her unsettling encounter on the set of her debut film, A Walk In The Clouds, the Will & Grace star shed light on the hardships she endured during filming alongside Keanu Reeves back in 1995.

Messing recounted a troubling incident where director Alfonso Arau pressured her to film a n^ked scene, leaving her in a difficult position.

Despite expressing her discomfort to her agent, she was met with a stark ultimatum that failing to comply could cost her the role.

Confronting Arau about his demands, Messing was met with dismissive remarks as he callously insisted that her sole job was to disrobe and deliver her lines.

Feeling cornered, she sought refuge with the producers who disclosed that the agreement only safeguarded her from n^dty in the domestic version, not the international release.

The actress detailed how Arau’s demeanor added to her distress during the scene, recounting how he callously exposed her body before casually covering her up as if discarding a used tissue.

Despite the harrowing experience, the final cut of the movie only featured her back in an exposed state.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Messing expressed her belief that the director’s actions were intended to undermine her and strip away her empowerment, portraying it as a deliberate power play aimed at diminishing her stature.

The unsettling incidents did not conclude there, as Messing further disclosed a derogatory comment made by Arau regarding her appearance during a kissing scene with Reeves.

Labeling her nose as a hindrance to the film, he disparagingly referred to her as “that nose” throughout the shooting day, even suggesting the immediate intervention of a plastic surgeon.

Recalling her shock at the director’s callous remarks, Messing highlighted the stark contrast between her confidence as a trained actress and the sudden reduction to a perceived flaw on set.

She emphasized that the issue lies not with her but with the industry’s rigid standards of beauty and worth imposed on women.

In sharing her unsettling experiences, Debra Messing sheds light on the pervasive challenges faced by women in Hollywood and the importance of speaking out against such demeaning practices.
