Emma Thompson has disclosed that her display of emotions in a particular scene from the movie Sense And Sensibility left Hugh Grant feeling annoyed.
In the 1995 film adaptation of Jane Austin’s novel, Emma portrayed Elinor Dashwood, a character who harbors secret affection for Hugh’s character, Edward Ferrars.
During a crucial moment towards the end of the movie, Emma’s character experiences a surge of emotions upon learning that Edward did not go through with his engagement to another woman.
In an interview with the New Yorker, Emma shared that Hugh was displeased when she opted to shed tears during Edward’s monologue.
Recounting the incident, Emma explained how she aimed to convey a sense of spontaneous emotion, noting in her diary that she tried to make the tears seem involuntary, attributing it to the diaphragm taking control.
Despite their on-screen clash, Emma and Hugh, who starred together in Sense And Sensibility, have maintained a strong bond over the years, culminating in a reunion for the beloved 2003 film Love Actually.
Reflecting on their friendship, Hugh praised Emma as a “genius” in a 2018 interview with People, albeit humorously pointing out that she is “not remotely sane.”
