Geena Davis Recounts Uncomfortable Encounter with Director During Love Scene Audition

Renowned actress Geena Davis has shared a distressing incident from her past involving a director who coerced her into sitting on his lap to rehearse a romantic scene.

The 63-year-old star delved into her encounters within the entertainment industry in the latest documentary titled ‘This Changes Everything,’ shedding light on the persistent issues of gender bias and misrepresentation faced by women.

Reflecting on the unsettling experience, Davis disclosed to USA Today, “During an audition for a role that required a scene where my character sits on the male lead’s lap, the director insisted on acting it out with me.

Despite feeling uneasy and reluctant, I complied as I was unaware of my right to decline such demands.”

She emphasized the importance of the ongoing movements like #MeToo and Time’s Up in empowering women to speak out against such inappropriate conduct and advocate for their boundaries.

Addressing the prevalent challenges encountered by women in the industry, Davis remarked, “While precautions are now taken to avoid one-on-one meetings in secluded spaces like private rooms or hotel suites, instances of such misconduct have persisted over time, casting a shadow on the professional landscape.”

Despite her accomplished career in Hollywood, Davis confessed to harboring initial doubts regarding one of her iconic roles as Thelma in the film ‘Thelma & Louise.’

Recalling her first impressions of the script, she shared, “Upon reading the script for ‘Thelma & Louise,’ I envisioned myself playing the role of Louise.

However, my acting mentor suggested otherwise, prompting me to consider portraying the more mature character.”

Yet, upon meeting Susan Sarandon, her co-star in the movie, Davis underwent a change of heart.

She expressed, “Upon meeting Susan, it became evident that she embodied the essence of Louise effortlessly.

Our instant connection led me to embrace the role of Thelma, drawn by Susan’s poise and admiration for her talent.”
