“I Regret My Actions” Kiefer Sutherland reflects on his time in jail

Renowned actor and musician, Kiefer Sutherland, recently shared his sentiments about the period he spent incarcerated due to driving under the influence, describing it as a humiliating experience.

Sutherland expressed feeling as though there was a glaring spotlight above him labeling him as an ‘idiot’.

The 55-year-old star of popular shows like “24” and “Young Guns,” whose lineage traces back to actors Donald Sutherland and the late Shirley Douglas, faced a series of arrests for DUI offenses spanning from 1987 to 2007.

Notably, in 2007, he served a 48-day sentence behind bars.

In conjunction with the release of his latest album, “Bloor Street,” which pays homage to a prominent street in Toronto, Sutherland made an appearance on the RTÉ Radio 1 arts show Arena, where he delved into discussions about his personal life and professional journey.

During his interview with presenter Kay Sheehy, touching upon his new track “County Jail Gate” containing the poignant lyrics “two tonnes of steel grinding on wheels,” Sutherland elaborated on the weight of those prison gates, recounting witnessing such scenes firsthand.

Reflecting on his past actions, Sutherland acknowledged the gravity of his mistakes, expressing profound humiliation and regret.

He vividly painted a picture of the unsettling atmosphere within the confinement, emphasizing the piercing sound of screeching gates, flashing buzzers, and the vigilant presence of guards, amplifying the sense of shame.

Recalling pivotal moments of introspection during his incarceration, Sutherland shared insights into the mindset shifts that transpired.

He emphasized the stark realization of the need for change, the importance of seeking support from loved ones, and the imperative adjustments required to steer his life in a positive direction.

For Sutherland, penning the song “County Jail Gate” served as a cathartic outlet, enabling him to encapsulate his past experiences and emotions into a piece of art.

Through the act of composing this track, he found solace in the process of closure, symbolically encapsulating his past struggles and paving the way for personal growth and redemption.

“Bloor Street,” Sutherland’s latest musical offering, is now available for listeners on Cooking Vinyl, encapsulating themes of reflection, resilience, and the transformative power of self-forgiveness.
