Kate Winslet Reflects on Unkind Criticisms Regarding Her Weight During ‘Titanic’ Controversy

Actress Kate Winslet, who has won an Academy Award, has spoken out against the harsh treatment she endured at the start of her career.

In light of the 25th anniversary of the 1997 film Titanic directed by James Cameron, Winslet shared her thoughts on the body shaming she encountered from both the media and the public during the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

Recalling certain disparaging remarks made about her weight in relation to the iconic scene where Jack (portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio) perishes, Winslet expressed her dismay.

She questioned why such criticisms were directed towards her, emphasizing that she did not consider herself overweight in any way.

Expressing regret over not standing up for herself more assertively at the time, Winslet admitted that she would have handled the situation differently now.

She spoke about the importance of not allowing oneself to be mistreated and bullied, especially when going through personal changes and insecurities.

Winslet has previously described the treatment she received from tabloids as “cruel” and recounted instances where they commented on her size, speculated on her weight, and even published details of her supposed diet.

These actions deeply affected her emotionally, causing distress and sadness.

Recounting her experience with the British media following the release of Titanic, Winslet revealed how drastically her life changed overnight.

The sudden shift in public scrutiny made her realize the negative aspects of fame and its impact on her well-being.

Reflecting on the ongoing debate surrounding Jack’s fate in the film, Winslet humorously addressed the question of whether both characters could have survived on the door at the end of the movie.

Despite the speculation, she admitted uncertainty but ultimately concluded that the door would not have been able to support both of them.

In a light-hearted manner, Winslet acknowledged the endless discussions about the door scene, adding her own perspective on the matter.

She noted that while Jack could physically fit on the door, the practicality of it staying afloat was questionable.
