In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Liam Neeson disclosed that he had been approached by James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli multiple times in the 1990s regarding the possibility of portraying the iconic character.
This offer came on the heels of Neeson’s Oscar nomination for his performance in “Schindler’s List.”
However, despite the allure of playing one of cinema’s most legendary action heroes, Neeson ultimately turned down the opportunity due to his wife, Natasha Richardson.
Neeson recounted how Broccoli had expressed interest in him after the success of “Schindler’s List.”
He was open to the idea until a pivotal moment during the filming of “Nell” in North Carolina when Richardson delivered a decisive message.
Neeson recalled her words, “Liam, I want to tell you something: If you play James Bond, we’re not getting married.”
The actor’s deep love and commitment to Richardson superseded any ambition he had for the role of James Bond.
Despite his playful antics of mimicking Bond’s signature moves behind his wife’s back, Neeson respected her wishes.
Reflecting on the situation, he shared that Richardson’s ultimatum was no joke, as she was genuinely concerned about the romantic entanglements that often accompany the character.
While Neeson missed out on the opportunity to join the ranks of James Bond, he found success in other action-packed ventures, notably the highly acclaimed “Taken” series.
Additionally, his portrayal of Qui-Gon Jinn in “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace” introduced him to the realm of mega-franchises, although he currently has no plans to revisit that universe.
During a recent appearance on “Watch What Happens Live!
“, Neeson expressed his reluctance to return to the “Star Wars” franchise, citing the proliferation of spinoffs as a factor that diminishes the original allure and enchantment of the series.
Despite this, Neeson continues to captivate audiences with his latest film, “Marlowe,” now showing in cinemas.
