Meryl Streep: Overcoming Rejection with Grace

Renowned actress Meryl Streep, known for being the most-nominated actress in Academy Award history, faced a significant setback early in her career when she was deemed too unattractive for a role in the film “King Kong.”

During an appearance on “The Graham Norton Show,” Streep recounted how this rejection became a pivotal moment in her life.

Rather than allowing it to deter her ambitions in acting, being turned down for the part in “King Kong” served as a driving force propelling her towards success.

At the age of 26, Streep auditioned for a role in Dino De Laurentiis’s version of “King Kong” in 1975.

Despite being recommended by Laurentiis’s son, she faced harsh criticism from the senior De Laurentiis who, upon seeing her, remarked negatively in Italian, describing her as “che brutta,” translating to “how ugly” in English.

Recalling the incident, Streep described how she was brought to the top floor of the Gulf and Western building for the audition.

Laurentiis’s son eagerly introduced her to his father, only for the senior De Laurentiis to make disparaging remarks about her appearance in Italian, which she understood.

In response, Streep gracefully acknowledged his comments, expressing her regret for not meeting the standards of beauty required for “King Kong.”

Despite this initial rejection and criticism based on her looks, Streep went on to achieve remarkable success in her career.

With a total of three Academy Awards to her name, she has been recognized for her exceptional talent with wins for Best Supporting Actress in 1979, Best Actress in 1982, and most recently, Best Actress in 2011 for her role in “The Iron Lady.”

Streep’s ability to overcome such a discouraging start and emerge as one of the most celebrated actresses in the industry serves as a testament to her resilience and unwavering dedication to her craft.
