Famous actor Russell Crowe found himself in hot water earlier this week as he was arrested by New York City police on a charge of second-degree assault.
The incident took place at the upscale Mercer Hotel in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood, where Crowe was staying as a guest.
The trouble began in the early hours of Monday morning when Crowe, seemingly agitated about not being able to make a phone call to Australia, reportedly threw a phone at a hotel employee during a confrontation at the front desk.
The phone struck the employee in the face, causing a minor laceration that required medical attention at St. Vincent’s Hospital.
Following the altercation, Crowe was promptly taken into police custody and charged with second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon (the telephone).
He was later brought before Manhattan Criminal Court for arraignment and subsequently released without bail, pending his next court appearance scheduled for September 14.
If convicted of the assault charge, Crowe could potentially face up to four years in prison.
In response to the incident, Crowe’s publicist, Robin Baum, provided a statement to the TV show Extra, explaining that the altercation stemmed from the actor’s frustration with a clerk’s uncooperative attitude regarding his phone call request.
Baum clarified that while Crowe did express his displeasure by throwing the phone against a wall, he did not physically assault any hotel staff member.
Despite Crowe’s reported history of off-screen outbursts, the actor recently expressed a desire to reform his behavior, citing his role as a boxer in a film as an eye-opening experience.
In a previous interview, Crowe acknowledged the negative impact of violence and emphasized his commitment to avoiding similar situations in the future.
He emphasized that portraying a boxer on screen does not define his real-life persona, and he aims to distance himself from such behaviors once filming concludes.
The incident involving Crowe serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by celebrities in managing their public image and grappling with personal frustrations.
