Tom Hardy Opens Up About Charlize Theron’s Concerns on Mad Max: Fury Road Set

Tom Hardy has responded to Charlize Theron’s statement that she was extremely frightened of him while filming Mad Max: Fury Road.

Theron, who portrayed Imperator Furiosa in the 2015 sequel directed by George Miller, discussed her challenges collaborating with Hardy in a newly released book.

Entitled Blood, Sweat, and Chrome: The Untold Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, the book discloses a tense encounter between the two actors following Hardy’s late arrival on set.

Hardy, who took on the lead role, admitted to the incident that left Theron feeling insecure.

Acknowledging the situation, he told author Kyle Buchanan, “Looking back, there were many aspects where I was out of my depth.

The pressure on both of us was immense at times.”

He further remarked, “What she required was a more competent, perhaps more seasoned partner in me.

I like to believe that now, being older and less attractive, I could handle that responsibility.”

As per the film’s camera operator, Mark Goellnicht, Hardy exhibited “hostile” behavior after Theron verbally lashed out at him in a “full-blown tirade.”

Reportedly, Theron exclaimed, “Fine the darn jerk a hundred grand for every minute he’s delayed this crew.”

“He might have caught wind of some of it, but he approached her aggressively and demanded, ‘What did you say to me?'”

Goellnicht recounted.

“He was quite confrontational.

She genuinely felt threatened, and that was the tipping point.”

Aiming to address the incident, Theron expressed, “It reached a point where things got a bit out of hand.

I didn’t feel secure.”

First assistant camera Ricky Schamburg believed that Hardy’s tardiness seemed intentionally provocative, stating, “I think he understood that it was greatly irritating Charlize because she is professional and arrives very early.”

Theron specifically requested Denise Di Novi, a female producer, to be present on the set in Namibia.

She confided in Buchanan, saying, “I don’t want to dwell on the past, but it arose from a really difficult moment where things escalated between Tom and me.”

Mad Max: Fury Road achieved immense success, garnering significant box office earnings and clinching six Oscars out of 10 nominations.

It also stood out as one of the most acclaimed films of that year.

Blood, Sweat, and Chrome: The Untold Story of Mad Max: Fury Road is scheduled for release on 17 March.
