Anna Kendrick Rejects Romantic Storyline in Pitch Perfect 3

Anna Kendrick, known for her role as Beca in the popular musical comedy Pitch Perfect series, has openly shared that she declined a potential romantic plotline in Pitch Perfect 3, deeming it “problematic.”

The 32-year-old actress, reprising her role as Beca, made a firm decision against engaging in a romantic relationship with Guy Burnet’s character, Theo, a music executive.

This refusal stemmed from Kendrick’s belief that such a storyline would pose significant challenges due to their existing professional association, where Theo tries to recruit her as a solo artist.

Initially, the script intended for the music executive to be Beca’s love interest, but Kendrick expressed her concerns about this direction.

She candidly stated, “Originally the music executive was supposed to be my romantic interest, but I said no to that, because I thought that would be kind of problematic,” during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK.

Despite her initial refusal, Kendrick encountered another version of the script where the characters were meant to share a kiss towards the end of the movie.

Recalling this, she mentioned how she raised objections, questioning why others couldn’t see the issue as well.

Eventually, after her insistence, the idea was dropped.

In Pitch Perfect 3, Beca finds herself at the center stage as the standout performer of the Bellas when the a cappella group reunites for a final performance at a singing competition during an overseas USO tour.

Theo, along with DJ Khaled making a cameo appearance as himself, selects Beca to be the opening act for his upcoming tour as a solo artist.

Expressing her surprise at this turn of events, Kendrick revealed that she was taken aback by the decision to position Beca as a music star in the film.

Given Beca’s aspirations of becoming a top music producer, the sudden shift in storyline required some persuasion on Kendrick’s part.

“It was not what she ever wanted… From the beginning she wanted to be a producer, and so I was surprised that they wanted this artist storyline with her,” Kendrick remarked.

Despite her initial reservations, Kendrick acknowledged the collective effort to make the altered storyline plausible within the context of the film.

Furthermore, Kendrick shared her amusement at receiving directives to wear costumes that are “tighter,” “sexier,” or “reveal more skin” from higher authorities involved in the production.

She humorously dismissed these suggestions, emphasizing that the essence of the film lies beyond showcasing their physical appeal.

“It’s funny – whenever we do the wardrobe fittings I feel like we get notes from the top saying they should be tighter and sexier and show more skin,” Kendrick quipped.

She emphasized that the audience’s interest in the movie stems
