Elizabeth Banks: Too Old for Spider-Man’s Girlfriend Role at 28

Elizabeth Banks, the director of Pitch Perfect 2, recently disclosed that she was rejected for the part of Spider-Man’s girlfriend, Mary-Jane Watson, in the 2002 superhero film because she was deemed “too old,” despite being just 16 months older than the male lead, Tobey Maguire.

In an interview with Glamour magazine, Banks shared her experience, stating that she had auditioned for the role of Mary-Jane Watson in the original Spider-Man movie alongside Tobey Maguire.

Although they were almost the same age, she was informed that she was too mature for the character.

She accepted the decision, acknowledging the norms of the industry.

The coveted role eventually went to Kirsten Dunst, who was only 18 when filming commenced in 2001.

However, Banks did secure a part in all three films of the Spider-Man trilogy as Betty Brant, playing the role of the secretary to Daily Bugle’s publisher, J Jonah Jameson, portrayed by JK Simmons.

Subsequently, Banks embarked on a successful acting career, specializing in comedic roles in movies like Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Jesse Peretz’s Our Idiot Brother, and Kirk Jones’ What to Expect When You’re Expecting.

Transitioning to producing, Banks achieved success with the first Pitch Perfect film, which turned out to be a surprise box office hit.

She then took on the directorial duties for its sequel, Pitch Perfect 2.
