Elvis Presley’s Abstinence: The Untold Story of a Tumultuous Marriage

Elvis Presley made headlines when reports surfaced that he refrained from engaging in intimate relations with his wife, Priscilla, for a staggering seven years.

Despite her pleas on their wedding day, where she professed her virginity and begged him not to make her plead, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll remained distant.

The iconic singer tied the knot with his longtime partner on May 1, 1967, at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas.

The wedding extravaganza, orchestrated by Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’s manager, was a lavish affair complete with a press conference and a luxurious $10,000 breakfast reception attended by a host of guests from MGM, RCA, and the William Morris Agency.

Following the grandiose celebration, the newlyweds embarked on a private jet to Palm Springs, California, for their honeymoon, which lasted until May 4.

It was during this romantic getaway that, reportedly, they consummated their marriage for the first time after being in a relationship for approximately seven years, starting when Priscilla was a mere 14 years old.

Despite sharing a bed for years, there were murmurs suggesting that Elvis was reluctant to walk down the aisle with Priscilla.

According to revelations in the biography “Down at the End of Lonely Street: The Life and Death of Elvis Presley” by Peter Harry Brown and Pat H Broeske, a long-time housekeeper, Alberta Holman, witnessed Elvis in tears over the impending nuptials.

When questioned about why he didn’t call off the wedding, he purportedly responded, “I don’t have a choice.”

Speculations also circulated that Priscilla may have pressured Elvis into marriage.

Additionally, rumors swirled that her father, displeased with Elvis cohabiting with his daughter without formalizing their relationship, threatened legal action against the star for transporting a minor across state lines.

Priscilla later revealed her yearning for a deeper connection in their relationship, expressing that Elvis would only engage in prolonged kissing and caresses that left her yearning for more.

In an interview with Barbara Walters, she disclosed that Elvis had voiced a preference for a virgin based on his past experiences.

Elvis, known for his extramarital affairs, was involved with actresses Anita Wood and Ann Margret during his courtship with Priscilla.

Susan Finstad delved into Priscilla’s undisclosed liaisons before her marriage to Elvis in her 1997 biography, “Child Bride: The Untold Story of Priscilla Beaulieu Presley,” shedding light on her previous relationships with several individuals.

Shortly after their wedding, Priscilla discovered she was pregnant, a revelation that caught her off guard.

Allegedly, she had requested to use birth control pills, but Elvis dismissed the idea, claiming they were not foolproof.

The pregnancy marked the beginning of the end for their tumultuous marriage, leading to their eventual separation in February 1972.

Reflecting on their complex relationship, Priscilla confessed to Barbara Walters that Elvis struggled to reconcile her role as both a mother and a young woman in his life.

She came to realize that, in his eyes, he was more of a father figure than a romantic partner—a dynamic that became increasingly strained over the years.
