Emma Thompson’s Bold Response to Ageism in Hollywood

Emma Thompson, who at 36 starred alongside Hugh Grant in 1995’s “Sense and Sensibility,” didn’t hold back when faced with comments about her age relative to Grant.

In a recent interview with Vulture, Thompson shared an incident where someone suggested she was too old for Grant, who is just a year younger than her.

The issue of ageism in Hollywood, as pointed out by the 56-year-old actress, remains prevalent.

Thompson expressed her frustration, stating, “The age thing is insane.”

She recalled commenting years ago, at the age of 35, that they would need to dig someone up to play her leading man.

Earlier this year, Maggie Gyllenhaal, aged 37, revealed that executives had deemed her “too old” to star opposite a 55-year-old actor.

Gyllenhaal’s revelation sparked a wave of similar sentiments from other actresses.

Helen Mirren, known for her outspoken nature, labeled the issue as “outrageous” and “annoying.”
