How Burt Lancaster’s Humor Brought Kirk Douglas to Tears

Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas, renowned figures from the illustrious era of Hollywood, not only captivated audiences on the silver screen but also forged a remarkable bond off-screen.

Lancaster, known for his striking appearance and commanding presence, solidified his status as the quintessential American leading man following his standout performance alongside Frank Sinatra in the 1953 classic From Here To Eternity.

In parallel, Douglas garnered acclaim for his roles in grand productions such as Spartacus and Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory, establishing himself as a rising star in the industry.

His career spanned more than six decades, positioning him as one of the few remaining luminaries of Hollywood’s Golden Age, with even Tom Cruise acknowledging his exceptional talent.

Despite frequently crossing paths and collaborating extensively, their camaraderie, often characterized by light-hearted banter, occasionally delved into deeper emotional realms, as recounted in an anecdote from Kate Buford’s biography, An American Life.

Their initial collaboration transpired when Lancaster was already a prominent figure, having headlined the iconic film From Here To Eternity in 1953 alongside Sinatra.

Subsequently, in 1957, Lancaster and Douglas co-starred in Gunfight at the O.K.

Corral, marking the genesis of a profound connection between them.

Their instant rapport led to production delays due to uncontrollable fits of laughter shared between the two actors.

However, a less amicable incident unfolded during a public appearance, initiated by Lancaster teasing Douglas about his height.

The jovial taunting escalated when Lancaster suggested that Douglas used shoe inserts to appear taller, striking a sensitive chord within the five-foot-seven-inch Douglas in contrast to Lancaster’s towering six-foot-two stature.

The unexpected turn of events left Douglas visibly moved, causing him to shed tears in front of onlookers, offering a glimpse into the complexity of their relationship where jesting could swiftly transition into emotional turmoil.

Lancaster’s penchant for teasing Douglas extended further, as he humorously introduced Douglas at events by remarking, “Kirk would be the first to admit he is a difficult person…

I would be the second.”

Nevertheless, over the passage of time, their friendship deepened.

Following Lancaster’s demise in 1994, Douglas, mourning the loss of his cherished companion, lamented the departure of a colossal figure from his life.

Despite encountering disagreements and navigating through Douglas’ vulnerabilities, the enduring bond between Douglas and Lancaster transcended transient conflicts.

Reflecting on the nostalgia of past friendships in 2017, Douglas expressed his yearning for Lancaster, reminiscing, “I miss Burt Lancaster.

We fought a lot, and I miss him a lot.”

Through their shared experiences, both harmonious and tumultuous, Lancaster and Douglas etched a story of camaraderie that surpassed the test of time.
