Mark Ruffalo’s Struggles with Corset and Padding in ‘Poor Things’

In a recent revelation, Mark Ruffalo shared the challenges he faced while portraying his character in the upcoming film, Poor Things.

The 56-year-old actor disclosed that he had to wear a corset and padding to achieve the desired look for his role.

During a candid conversation with Robert Downey Jr. on Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, Ruffalo expressed, “Do you know I had an *ss pad in?

My legs were, like, four inches bigger.

My calf was four [inches].

He really wanted the silhouette.

So I was wearing a corset with shoulder pads, so I was so squeezed in.”

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, Poor Things is a period fantasy comedy that revolves around a young woman, portrayed by Emma Stone, who is brought to life by a scientist and embarks on a journey with a hedonistic lawyer played by Ruffalo.

Despite the intensity of using corsets and padding, Ruffalo revealed that his costume for Poor Things was initially intended to be even more elaborate.

The actor shared, “[Lanthimos] wanted me to look like a bird, so I had this whole built out chest piece that never made it because it was just too much.

But the big *ss pads, the leg pads, the thigh pads, the calf pads, those were all playing.

So when you look at that and you’re like, ‘Wow, he looks great’ — now you know, I was just wearing what the Avengers wear, but underneath my clothes.”

In addition to the physical transformations, Ruffalo also participated in a n^de scene early in the film.

Despite his reservations, he found humor and storytelling value in the moment.

The actor shared, “I was like, ‘Do I have to?’ All I can hear is, ‘Nobody wants to see your old *ss anymore.

Maybe you shouldn’t be doing movies like that anymore.’ I mean, it’s my least favorite part of it, but I also saw it as very comedic and also, like, an extension of the physical comedy that we were already finding.

So it was just another way to tell the story.”

Downey, a longtime friend of Ruffalo and co-star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, acknowledged the actor’s reluctance towards showcasing his physique on screen.

Reflecting on a past instance during an Avengers movie, where Ruffalo was required to appear shirtless, Downey praised Ruffalo’s dedication to his craft.

As Poor Things gears up for its theatrical release on Friday, December 8, audiences can anticipate witnessing Ruffalo’s transformative performance and commitment to bringing his character to life in this unique and captivating film.
