Steel Magnolias Director Accused of Mistreating Julia Roberts, Reveals Sally Field

The production of the 1989 film “Steel Magnolias” was not all glitz and glamour for Julia Roberts.

While the movie propelled her to stardom, behind the scenes, she faced mistreatment from director Herbert Ross on set in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Co-stars Sally Field and Shirley MacLaine shed light on Roberts’ challenging experience with Ross during Target Presents AFI Night at the Movies in Hollywood on April 24.

MacLaine, who portrayed salon patron Ouiser, described Ross as a strict choreographer, noting his occasional harshness.

She recalled how the cast bonded together after Ross criticized their acting abilities, creating lasting memories from the filming experience.

Field, cast as Roberts’ character’s mother, M’Lynn, revealed that Ross particularly targeted Roberts with his harsh critiques.

This treatment was especially tough on Roberts, as it was one of her first major films.

Despite Ross’ passing in October 2001, the impact of his actions on the set still resonates with those involved.

MacLaine shared that Roberts would seek solace at her home, expressing doubts about her acting skills and breaking down in tears.

An incident where Ross suggested Dolly Parton take acting lessons highlighted the director’s inappropriate behavior, according to Field, who defended Parton’s talent and wit.

In challenging moments, veteran actresses like Field, MacLaine, and Parton rallied around Roberts, standing up against Ross when his behavior crossed the line.

The cast’s unity in facing adversity brought them closer together, creating a bond that extended beyond the film set.

Despite the difficulties encountered during production, the cast members still cherish the film as a tale of friendship’s enduring power.

Field emphasized the theme of friendship, while MacLaine highlighted the lasting connections formed among the cast, despite their shared struggles with the director.

Roberts’ performance in “Steel Magnolias” earned her critical acclaim, culminating in her first Academy Award nomination for her role as Shelby Eatenton Latcherie.

Despite not winning the Oscar that year, Roberts later secured an Academy Award for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich in the eponymous film, solidifying her status as a versatile and talented actress in Hollywood.
