Theron’s Traumatic Past: The Night Her Mother Acted in Self-Defence

In a recent interview, Charlize Theron shared a chilling account of the night her mother had to defend them by killing her father.

This harrowing incident took place in 1991 when Theron, the acclaimed Oscar-winning actress, was just 15 years old.

Theron and her mother, Gerda, found themselves in a terrifying situation at their farm near Johannesburg, facing Theron’s drunken and armed father.

During her conversation with NPR, Theron described the events of that fateful night vividly.

She recalled how her intoxicated father, wielding a gun, attempted to force his way into their bedroom where they were seeking refuge.

Theron narrated, “My father was so drunk that he shouldn’t have been able to walk when he came into the house with a gun.

My mum and I were in my bedroom leaning against the door because he was trying to push through the door.”

The situation escalated as her father fired three shots through the door while Theron and her mother braced it from the inside.

Miraculously, none of the bullets struck them.

Theron expressed her gratitude, stating, “None of the bullets ever hit us, which is just a miracle.”

In a decisive moment, Theron’s mother, Gerda, took action to protect herself and her daughter by putting an end to the threat posed by Charles, Theron’s father.

The incident was legally deemed an act of self-defence, absolving Gerda of any criminal charges.

Reflecting on the traumatic event, Theron emphasized the importance of discussing such experiences openly.

She affirmed, “I’m not ashamed to talk about it, because I do think that the more we talk about these things, the more we realise we are not alone in any of it.”

Theron believes that sharing such stories sheds light on the struggles faced by individuals growing up in challenging environments, particularly with family members battling addiction.

Theron revealed that her perception of her father was primarily shaped by his struggles with alcoholism.

She stated that she viewed him solely as an alcoholic due to his ongoing battle with addiction.

Moreover, during the interview, Theron delved into her upbringing in apartheid-era South Africa, highlighting the difficulties she encountered.

She also disclosed a distressing experience of being s**ually harassed by a prominent film director during her early career.

Fans can catch Theron portraying the role of Megyn Kelly in the upcoming film “Bombshell,” set to premiere in UK cinemas on January
