Why Marlon Brando refused to bed actress Vivien Leigh

Marlon Brando opened up about his decision not to become romantically involved with while filming the classic ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ in his 1994 autobiography, shedding light on the dynamics that played out off-screen.

Both Brando and Leigh delivered unforgettable performances in the 1951 film adaptation directed by Elia Kazan, based on Tennessee Williams’ acclaimed play.

Leigh captured the essence of the fragile and troubled Blanche DuBois, while Brando’s intense portrayal of her aggressive brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski, catapulted him to stardom.

In his memoir, Songs My Mother Taught Me, Brando, known for his charming ways with women, revealed a fleeting interest in his co-star.

However, the weight of her marriage to Sir Laurence Olivier held him back from acting on his attraction.

Brando, who had made his mark as Stanley on Broadway in 1947, was not overly impressed with the choice of Jessica Tandy for the film’s original production.

Even though Tandy garnered acclaim and a Tony Award for her performance, Brando found that she lacked the nuanced femininity and delicate fragility he felt the character demanded.

On the flip side, Brando stated that Leigh, who had portrayed Blanche on the West End, was ideally suited for the role.

“In many ways, she was Blanche,” he wrote, implying that Leigh’s embodiment of the character brought it to life in a way that resonated deeply with audiences.

Brando’s admiration for Leigh extended beyond her acting.

He remarked on her striking beauty but also noted her vulnerability—two traits that made her the perfect fit for Blanche.

“She was memorably beautiful,” he said, underscoring that her life had mirrored the torment of the character she portrayed.

Leigh’s struggles were well-documented, marked by periods of serious mental and physical health challenges.

A diagnosis of bipolar disorder—and repeated bouts with tuberculosis—saw her battling the fragility that Brando praised.

Her erratic relationships and personal issues only compounded her difficulties.

Despite being a notorious womanizer, Brando admired Leigh’s talent and circumstances enough not to interfere in her marriage to Olivier.

At the time, he was aware of the complexities surrounding their relationship, including her rumored affairs, which weighed heavily on his decision.

In an introspective moment, Brando confessed that he might have pursued her under different circumstances but found himself hesitant not only out of respect for Olivier but also recognizing Leigh’s deteriorating state.

“I liked him too much to invade his chicken coop,” he reflected in his memoir.

Olivier and Leigh shared a tumultuous union for two decades, marked by creativity and deep love, yet often strained by infidelities and mental health struggles that led to their divorce in 1960.

Their marital conflicts served as a backdrop to Leigh’s on-screen performances, enriching the drama of her character’s struggles.

The success of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ cannot be overstated, with the film receiving twelve nominations at the Academy Awards and winning five.

Both stars were nominated for their respective roles, but it was Leigh who ultimately took home the Oscar for Best Actress.

Brando’s choice to remain platonic with Leigh spoke volumes about his character in that moment.

Perhaps he saw beyond the allure of romance, recognizing the intense pressures Leigh faced as she embodied a character only too similar to her own life.

In this respect, he emerged not just as a heartthrob but as a considerate colleague.

This balance between attraction and respect paints a nuanced picture of two legends caught in a whirlwind of Hollywood glamour and personal struggles.
