Elizabeth Banks Shares Experience of Age Discrimination on Original Spider-Man Casting

Elizabeth Banks recently opened up about her audition for the role of Mary Jane Watson in the original Spider-Man movie, where she was deemed too old for the part despite being just one year older than her potential love interest in the film.

In a recent interview with GlamourUK, Banks disclosed that she underwent a screen-test alongside Tobey Maguire, who was 27 at the time of filming.

However, she was turned down for the role due to her age, even though she was only 28 years old at the time.

Expressing her thoughts on the matter, Banks, now 42, shared with GlamourUK via Vanity Fair that she was informed she was too old for the role.

She noted the irony of being considered too old when she and Maguire were practically the same age, stating, “Oh, okay, that’s what I’ve signed up for.”

Ultimately, the role of Mary Jane Watson went to Kirsten Dunst, who was 18 during the filming of the movie.

Despite missing out on the coveted role, Banks did secure a part in the film as Betty Brant, the newspaper secretary.

Reflecting on the experience in 2008, Banks mentioned that she initially viewed the role of Betty Brant as a consolation prize.

Recounting the casting process, she revealed, “I was a nobody.

I had no expectations of even being in that movie.

The casting director called and said, ‘As a consolation prize essentially do you want to be Betty Brant?'”

She further added, “So it started out as a consolation prize and it’s become a favor.”
