Matt Smith, renowned for his portrayal of Prince Philip in the early seasons of the hit Netflix series, The Crown, recently disclosed an amusing anecdote about his encounter with Prince Harry.
The actor shared that during a chance meeting at a polo match in 2017, Prince Harry greeted him with a surprising nickname, addressing him as “grandad,” to which Smith playfully responded with a casual, “Alright mate?”
It appears that Prince Harry was not only familiar with Smith’s depiction of his grandfather but also found humor in the portrayal, as revealed by Smith in a conversation with the BBC.
The actor mentioned that while he could not confirm if Prince Harry currently follows the show, the royal had indeed watched some episodes back then.
Interestingly, Smith added a tidbit about Queen Elizabeth II’s viewing habits, stating that she reportedly enjoyed watching The Crown on a projector on Sunday nights.
Despite these revelations, it seems that not everyone in the royal family shares the same enthusiasm for the historical drama.
According to Smith, Prince Philip himself was not particularly fond of the show.
Recounting an amusing incident relayed to him by a friend who dined with the Duke, Smith shared how the friend jokingly asked Prince Philip if he watched The Crown, to which the response was a dismissive, “Don’t be ridiculous.”
Matt Smith’s stellar performance as Prince Philip garnered critical acclaim, earning him a nomination for an Emmy award.
His portrayal alongside Claire Foy, who played Queen Elizabeth II, captivated audiences and critics alike during the early seasons of The Crown.
