Prince Harry Champions ‘Mental Fitness’ in Stirring UN Address

During a passionate speech at the United Nations, Prince Harry introduced a new concept that could change our approach to mental health.

The Duke of Sussex, 40, made his case for “mental fitness” while visiting New York City, where he joined Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso of Lesotho on September 24, as part of an event held during the U.N. General Assembly High-level Week.

In his remarks, Harry emphasized the critical nature of mental health, expressing deep concern over the alarming rise in youth suicides both in Lesotho and globally.

“A lot of my work relates to mental health and our shared well-being.

The increasing rates of suicide among young people weigh heavily on my heart, and I’m sure they do on yours as well,” he shared with the audience.

He passionately stated, “Good mental health, or mental fitness, isn’t just a luxury; it’s essential for all of us.

This is especially true for those in positions of influence and power.”

Harry underscored the urgency of tackling this issue, highlighting that it requires not only worldwide initiatives but also the bravery to confront stigma and engage in open conversations about mental health without fear of judgment.

As a self-described “mental health advocate,” Prince Harry’s commitment is evident through Sentebale, a charity he co-founded with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho back in 2006.

The organization aims to support children and young adults facing challenges related to HIV/AIDS and their mental well-being, perfectly aligning with the message he conveyed at the U.N.

The term “mental fitness” surfaced for the first time during Harry’s trip to New York, specifically on September 23.

The following day, he participated in a panel titled “The Global Mental Health Crisis Among Young People” alongside Dr. Tessy Ojo CBE, CEO of the Diana Award.

Dr. Ojo recounted how Prince Harry suggested reframing the narrative, saying, “We should no longer talk about mental health; we should talk about mental fitness.”

Harry’s dedication to mental well-being resonates deeply with the principles of The Diana Award, which honors the legacy of their mother, Princess Diana.

Both he and his brother, Prince William, actively support the initiative, believing in the power of young individuals to effect change.

They recently participated in a London event celebrating the award’s 25th anniversary, connecting with young Legacy Award winners from across the globe.

Among those young leaders were Christina Williams from Jamaica and Chiara Riyanti Hutapea Zhang from Indonesia.

They took the stage with Harry and Dr. Ojo at the Concordia Summit, sharing their insights and experiences.

After their discussion, Williams expressed her admiration for Prince Harry, remarking on his encouragement regarding their efforts to address mental fitness.

“It was inspiring to meet him.

He really motivated us, encouraging us that we would do great things,” Williams reflected, noting Harry’s emphasis on destigmatizing mental health issues.

“He stressed that it’s everyone’s responsibility to engage with these topics, highlighting the importance of mental fitness and overall well-being.”

Prince Harry’s visit to New York was packed with engagements aimed at furthering his philanthropic endeavors.

His spokesperson previously announced plans for him to promote various patronages, including his work with the Archewell Foundation alongside Meghan Markle, during the U.N.

High-level Week and Climate Week.

Throughout his whirlwind trip, Harry engaged with multiple organizations such as The Diana Award, The HALO Trust, and African Parks, underscoring his relentless dedication to making a difference.
