TV Star Amanda Redman Recounts Unsettling Encounter During BBC Audition

A well-known actress, Amanda Redman, disclosed an unsettling experience she had during a BBC audition back in the 1980s.

At the age of 22, she alleged that television executives requested her to remove her jeans as part of the audition process.

During an interview with Radio Times, the Good Karma Hospital star vividly remembered the incident where she was asked to take off her purple velvet jeans, with the executive suggesting they would look better on the floor.

She revealed, “I had one – this was an audition for the BBC – I walked in and the guy said, ‘Those purple velvet jeans look lovely on you, but I think they’d look better on the floor, would you take them off please?’”

Regrettably, such incidents were not isolated for Redman.

She expressed that such requests were a common occurrence for her during that period.

Recalling those distressing times, she shared, “It happened every day.

I didn’t take them off, obviously.

I burst into tears and I ran.

I remember exactly who it was, but I won’t be saying.

That was the norm then.

I was 22 as well – a baby, really.”

The actress had previously addressed the challenges women faced in the industry, highlighting the prevalence of s**ual harassment in the workplace, especially in the eighties and nineties.

Redman mentioned that refusing advances from directors resulted in mistreatment and constant humiliation on set, adversely affecting her confidence and career progression.

Discussing the portrayal of intimacy between older individuals in the entertainment industry, Amanda Redman emphasized the disparity between British and American audiences.

She noted that American viewers are more accepting of romantic scenes involving older characters, citing examples from popular TV shows like Madam Secretary where mature leads engage in healthy relationships without eliciting repulsion.

In light of her observations, Redman called for increased representation of older individuals in intimate scenes on British television, challenging the prevalent ageism that often restricts such portrayals.
